137: What a Legacy! Thank You Dolly
Dolly Parton. What can you say about her that hasn't already been said and will continue to be said following her death on August 25, 2026?
While talk of her music industry legacy is an obvious part of the global narrative, Dolly's consistently down-home, unpretentious, and incredibly generous character is the sub-plot that cannot be ignored.
Tributes spanned the globe. From musicians, to politicians, actors, educators, fans, and countless non-famous people the themes vary but the lessons from her legacy are timeless.
An humble beginning does not hinder your impact, it creates a foundation on which you can build a legacy that will outlast you.
Much has been said of Dolly Parton's humble origins from birth through her early years. But humility never left her and it's the core quality she carried forward throughout her life. Her extraordinary success never hindered Dolly from being the generous, funny, approachable, collaborative, accepting, and grateful person she was.
Dolly's engaging presence spanned all genres of music and entertainment in ways that not many entertainers can in such a competitive, self-aggrandizing industry. Her impact was so compelling that people aren't merely saying, "We lost a great entertainer," rather, "We lost a bold and unwavering example of how a human being can use their fame, money, talent, and influence for good."
That said, I had to save space here in my weekly content for the legacy-lessons Dolly Parton left to this world. So, here you go:
Dolly transcended social divisions.
She was loved across political, generational, geographic, racial, and cultural lines. What typically divides us, Dolly rose above, stepped through, or around. Would that all of us would follow her example. Our world could use that.
Dolly was as kind as she was talented.
Elton John said she was a "giant of an artist," with an extraordinarily kind heart.1 It wasn't uncommon in the entertainment industry for Dolly's kindness to be duplicated while being preceded by the comment, "What would Dolly do?"
Dolly made generosity practical and meaningful.
The Imagination Library that put free books into family households and the hands of their young children will remain among her most practical and far-reaching legacies. Medical research, including Vanderbilt University's research associated with the development of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine made a difference during a life-altering pandemic. Dolly put resources alongside her name and lives are better because of it.
Dolly wasn't afraid to be herself.
Her rhinestones and humor didn't detract from her intelligence or seriousness. They were evidence of her authenticity and the ability to be respected however she positioned herself. "True grace and true grit," is how Taylor Swift described her.2
Dolly gave people permission to be themselves.
Her advocacy was strong for people of all races, lifestyle choices, and commonly stereotyped or overlooked communities. Her faith-driven approach to life prevented her from being exclusionary while remaining strongly connected to her origins.
Dolly connected her songwriting to life.
Her songs compel memories and moments of celebration. The songs Dolly wrote and performed are iconic and ingrained in our personal histories.
Dolly was more than a country music artist.
She was an artistic "north star," according to Beyonce. Paul McCartney, affirmed her songwriting capabilities, her voice, and her philanthropy. And Taylor Swift gave her props for expanding the possibilities for young artists.3 Dolly clearly transcended her humble country music roots.
Dolly never forgot where she came from and lived to make a difference.
Her East Tennessee roots kept her grounded, creating a relentless drive to provide jobs and transform tourism within the Smoky Mountain region she called home. Dollywood was among her legacy's crown jewels, providing employment and an economic boost to circumstances that challenged the region.
I still remember Dolly's weekly television broadcast and how she ended each episode, singing, "I will always love you." Thanks for the love, Dolly. You've made this world a better place. May we always love with the same energy and authenticity you exemplified.
