How often do your think about change (and I'm not talking about simply changing your mind)?

Aging has a way of keeping change front and center.

You might reflect on the change that's occurred in the past 10, 15, or 20 years.

You might consider the change that you feel is coming but has yet to emerge on the horizon.

However you think about or approach change...just make sure that you value the ability to change.

Because as you've likely heard many times throughout your life: "It's never too late to change."

I've thought about that notion lately.

There are consistently things I'd like to change.

How about you?

Got some overdue change sitting around?

And maybe that's the problem with changing something - you sit on too many decisions hoping to change, wanting to change, longing to change...but here you are holding onto the idea but never taking the steps.

I don't know about you but I refuse to be so set-in-my-ways that I miss the opportunities that live on the other side of making some changes.

You'll never age out of the capacity to change as long as you're curious, compelled, and committed

Why be curious, compelled, and committed?

  • Curiosity is the motivation for change
  • Compelling resolve is the energy for change
  • Commitment is the decision to essential to change

Be curious until you discover something worth changing in your life

Have you ever watched someone do something, achieve something, or experience something and wonder how they did it?

Whatever it was it likely began with curiosity.

I curiously watched our youngest daughter decide, train, and complete her first half-marathon in 2024.

I was curious if I could, after a couple of decades of not running consistently, train and run a half-marathon, having not run that distance before.

Our daughter further stoked my curiosity by inviting me to run with her as she curiously took the next step of training and running a full-marathon.

In principle, become so curious about something that you feel is worth changing in your life.

  • A habit?
  • A book you want to read...or write?
  • A relationship you want to develop or mend?
  • A side-hustle you want to start?
  • An exercise or movement routine to improve your health and longevity?
  • A drawer, closet, or room you want to clean out?

Let your curiosity run wild - change will likely follow!

Be compelled until you're willing to take the steps to change

Nothing changes until you feel compelled to change.

There are occasions, such as with your health, that compulsion is thrust upon you - change or else.

But before it gets to that point, it's far better to find a compelling reason to make the necessary steps to change before the choice is made for you.

  • Be compelled by the alternative of not changing - think about the downside of staying as you are.
  • Be compelled by the results you can envision on the other side of change - picture a better future for yourself and those around you.
  • Be compelled by the legacy you can leave having made the change - consider how you'll be remembered as a result of the change you chose to make.

Be committed to do what's necessary until change has occurred

Change begins to happen when you commit.

Commitment of course evolves and deepens as you move forward on the change you desire.

Even so, committing is essential at every phase of what you're striving to change in your life.

  • Commitment will carry you through the times of low motivation.
  • Commitment will remind you that what you're doing is indeed worth the effort.
  • Commitment rewards you with new strength for future changes you might currently believe to be out of reach.

Change is its own reward but the process instills new resolve that more is possible...and achievable

  • Be curious - change is worth it.
  • Be compelled - change is a step by step process
  • Be committed - change is rewarding

Press on...
